Biological & Human Population

There are 7 billion people on the planet.  What kinds of consequences can we expect from this explosion of the human population?  Should we expect any at all?  Starting with ecological populations, we will learn how to measure population sizes, how a population's size can be influenced, and what we can expect from having a planet full of people.

After completing this unit, students will be able to:

  • Contrast how density dependent and density independent factors regulate a population size

  • Explain growth models, reproductive strategies, and survivorship curves

  • Evaluate social, economic, and environmental factors that contributed to growth rates in countries

  • Analyze relationships among changes in population size, economic development, and resource consumption at global and local scales.
